It’s a simple fact that oil keeps this country and economy moving; but oilfield thread protectors keep pipe preserved so the oil keeps flowing. The drilling equipment needed to obtain oil needs to be kept in peak condition to prevent work stoppages at the oil fields producing this valuable resource. Drill pipes are quite durable, but that doesn’t mean they are indestructible. As such, it’s important to purchase quality oilfield thread protectors to keep pipe and other valuable equipment safe through rough handling or extreme weather. Thread protectors are generally divided into three categories, which will be discussed below. Keep in mind that all of them are necessary for efficient material transport and operation.

Tubing Protectors

There are two types of tubing thread protection. Pin thread protectors keep the male end safe during transport and storage, while box protectors attend to the safety of female pipe ends. Both are necessary to ensure no damage is done during shipping, storage, or transport at the work site. Tubing protectors are available in both closed and open end designs and are generally made from polyethylene.

Casing Protectors

As with tubing protectors, casing protectors should be used on both the pin and box ends of plastic casings. BTC, or buttress thread and coupled, protectors are used for both casing and tubing, making them versatile. These polyethylene plastic thread protectors are lightweight and made to last. They should be used in both new and reconditioned equipment.

Tool Joint Protectors

Most tool joint protectors are made from either light- or heavy-duty plastics, or from pressed light-weight steel. Light-duty plastic protectors are the most economical choice, but only open end protectors are available in this material. Similarly, heavy duty plastic protectors can only be purchased in a closed end design. Although they are more expensive, pressed steel protectors are more versatile. They are also designed for easy removal with a square hole in the center intended to be used with a specialized removal tool.

When purchasing oil country tubular goods, it’s important to consider quality as well as price. The tubing, casing, and tool joints of piping all need to be adequately protected to keep expensive and specialized equipment working properly.
